Harvest Moon DS Cooking 101 Guide by Freyashawk email: castleenchanted · aol Updated on 20 April 2007 with more Cooking Festival glitch details. Created 25 September 2006 NO ATTACHMENTS - PLAIN TEXT E-MAILS ONLY Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about the game or my guide. I try to answer all serious requests for help but I will not open any email with an attachment. AOL sometimes considers a 'signature' or a simple icon as an attachment. Please send your emails as plain text or I shall not be able to respond. Thank you. This is intended as a Reference Guide for Cooking all recipes in Harvest Moon DS. At present, only a few of the 'Best Recipes' are included but all the Basic Recipes are given. In time, I hope to include both the Basic and the Best Recipe for each dish. The 'best' recipe is the one that has a chance to win the Cooking Festival as well as the one that will give the most points in terms of restoring Stamina and decreasing Fatigue. The Cooking Festival is a little different in HM DS from the way it operates in FoMT/MFoMT. Please read the section of this guide that deals specifically with it. I have written a General Guide for Harvest Moon DS that can be found at: Harvest Moon DS General Guide A guide that deals with the eligible girls in the game, all Heart and Rival Heart Events can be found at: Harvest Moon DS Heart and Rival Heart Events Guide A simple Calendar Guide that lists all Birthdays and Festivals can be found at: Harvest Moon DS Calendar Guide Please refer to the above Guides for all other aspects of life in Forget-Me- Not Valley in the DS version of Harvest Moon. Cooked Items and Energy Values A cooked item always will give more energy in terms of SR and FR than any raw ingredient. Even the simple act of boiling an egg will increase the egg's value in terms of energy. A boiled egg gives: +20 Stamina -2 Fatigue. The same small egg when consumed raw gives only +3 Stamina -1 Fatigue. If you throw the egg into the Hot Spring, it will become a Spa Egg, giving: +4 Stamina -2 Fatigue. As you can see, it is best to make Spa Eggs if you do not have a Kitchen, but once you have a Kitchen and Pot, a Boiled Egg gives five times the Stamina of a Spa Egg. Even the simple act of placing Bread in an Oven to make Toast increases its energy potential. Bread is worth only +2 Stamina -1 Fatigue. Pop that Bread into the Oven and as Toast it will provide +7 Stamina - 1 Fatigue. Another easy recipe that gives tremendous energy increase to an item is Baked Yam. A raw yam gives: +3 Stamina -1 Fatigue. Throw the Yam into the oven and it becomes a Baked Yam, giving: +40 Stamina -5 Fatigue. As you can see, simply baking the Yam not only multiplies the SR almost x11, but it multiplies the FR value x5! Best Recipes vs. Basic Recipes As in FoMT and MFoMT, there are 'basic' recipes and 'best' recipes for many of the dishes you can cook in Harvest Moon DS. The 'basic' recipe contains the minimum ingredients necessary to create a dish. The 'best' recipe contains optional ingredients that boost energy in terms of SR and FR. In terms of two different levels of crops, the recipe will distinguish between them as ingredients because they are different items that require different slots in your refrigerator or rucksack. A 'Best' recipe contains all optional ingredients that boost the SR and FR as much as possible. Here is an example of different forms of recipes for 'Curry Rice', a dish that is sometimes requested by the Sleeping Beauty, Princess Keira. As you will see, the Basic Curry Rice contains nothing more than Curry Powder and a Rice Ball. The Best Curry Rice contains 6 optional ingredients: Carrot, Onion, Potato, Bell Pepper, Eggplant and a Medium Fish. The Basic Curry Rice will give: +30 Stamina -2 Fatigue. If you add only a Green Pepper to the recipe, it will increase the SR by 8 points. If you add Green Pepper, Onion, Potato and Carrot, it will increase the SR by 23 Points from the Basic Recipe. If you add Green Pepper, Onion, Potato, Carrot, Eggplant and Medium Fish, it will increase the SR by 34 points from the Basic Recipe, giving you: +64 Stamina -2 Fatigue. As you see, the FR does not change at all. Cooked in pot: Basic Curry Rice: Rice Ball Curry Powder Best Curry Rice: Rice Ball Curry Powder Onion Potato Carrot Eggplant Medium Fish Green Pepper Whenever you make a new dish, you will receive a prompt: Write down the recipe! In many cases, there is a basic recipe and a 'better' or 'best' recipe that includes optional ingredients. The best recipe will give the highest SR and FR. It appears that the best result only is 'remembered' by the game for a day or two. If you make the recipe again on a different day, by using the 'best' rather than the basic recipe, the game will give you a prompt to the effect that SR and/or FR values have been improved, even if it is the same recipe you used previously! The Way to a Person's Heart An old French adage declares that 'the way to a man's heart is through his stomach'. This indeed is the case in Harvest Moon. For many individuals, the 'Most Favourite Item' is a cooked dish, giving maximum AP and FP (+800 AP and +900 FP) to an eligible girl and +9 FP to any other character. Although you can raise affection and friendship levels slowly but surely by giving other items such as chocolate, flowers and crops to individuals, a cooked item, when most favoured by that person, achieves more dramatic and speedy results. There is no time limit per se in this game, and you can have the heart level of every individual in the Valley at maximum level before the end of the first year by simply giving gifts each day that are worth +300 AP +3 FP for eligible girls and +3 FP for all other individuals. Even so, it is fun to make a special cooked dish for some one who loves it and to watch that person's reaction to it. The response to a 'Most Favourite' item always is different from the response to any other items. The Way to Keira's Heart Incidentally, Keira's responses to 'cooked' items is similar to the criteria used to judge dishes at the Cooking Festival. You have to try to find the very best TYPE of item to give her, rather than simply making the best version of the particular dish requested. In other words, when Keira asks you to bring 'Curry Rice', giving her the best version of the recipe for 'Curry Rice' will not suffice. You must give her 'Finest Curry' in order to fulfill the request. In submitting a dish for the Cooking Festival, you will find that you win only if you approach the problem in the same fashion with one distinction. 'Finest Curry' is utterly loathed by the Gourmet and he will pronounce that to be 'B A D' but 'Ultimate Curry' will win the prize in the year when the requirement is to create a dish using a Pot. Even the best 'Cheese Fondue' or the best 'Curry Rice' did not win. 'Relax Tea' is the one exception to this rule, as any Relax Tea evidently is considered to be superlative. Cooking Festival Glitch Unfortunately, there appears to be a glitch in Harvest Moon DS that operates in some games with respect to the Cooking Festival. I now have experienced this glitch myself in one of my own games. In the second year, I entered 'Ultimate Curry' as a 'Pot' entry and won the Festival. In the third year, I took 'Cake' to the festival as an 'Oven' entry. When I arrived with the Cake, the long trestle table where the entries should have been displayed was bare. Moreover, Thomas did not ask me if I had an entry. All he would ask is whether or not I was ready to allow the judging to occur. When I attempted to give him my Cake, he said rather outrageously, We can't start the contest if you keep carrying that stuff. Put it away.' My only option was to 'put it away' and allow the judging to go forward. As soon as I did that, the entries appeared on the trestle table, with the Ultimate Curry entry I had made the previous year. Obviously, the 'Ultimate Curry' was not an Oven dish. When the Gourmet reached the spurious entry, he still found it 'exceptional' but then told me, as one might expect: 'Wrong dish! You're disqualified!' Not only did this sorry state of affairs exist in the third year, but in the fourth year as well. It appears that, once the glitch occurs, it will occur ever year thereafter, although I would love to hear from a player who has managed to 'conquer' this unfortunate glitch. In other cases where players have experienced the glitch but never had won the contest or even entered the Contest before, the game entered 'Pickled Cucumbers' year after year, despite the player's determined attempts to enter dishes that would have been eligible to win the Contest. In a case where the player had won in the previous year with 'Mix Latte', the game entered 'Mix Latte'. At this point in time, the 'trigger' for the glitch has not been determined but if you have experienced this frustrating situation, please email me with details. What I do know is that the trigger for the glitch does not occur on the day of the contest. Even by reloading the game at 6.00 a.m., I could not change the outcome. It may be triggered on the previous day or it may be triggered far earlier. If any one is able to change the outcome by reloading a file from the PREVIOUS day, please contact me with details. Special Ingredients Ingredients for Recipes in Harvest Moon are found in a number of different ways. There are ingredients that are gathered in the wilds, such as all grasses, bamboo shoots, wild grapes and matsutake mushrooms. There are ingredients that are produced by farming, both as crops and as fruit harvested from trees that you plant. Some seeds can be purchased either from Karen or from Vesta. Fruit trees and Shitake Mushrooms can be purchased only from Vesta. There are commercial ingredients that are purchased from Karen's Supermarket, from riceballs to chocolate and wine. Fish must be caught using a Fishing Rod and only medium and large fish can be used in cooking in this game. Finally, there are special items that can be obtained only by attending specific Festivals. These items are buckwheat flour and rice cakes. By attending the Year End Festival, you will obtain either 10 Buckwheat Flour or 10 Buckwheat Noodles. The item you actually receive is RANDOM. If you save your game BEFORE you attend the Festival, you should be able to change the result, although it is possible that the chances of obtaining Buckwheat Flour are almost nil in the first couple of years. Obviously, the item you want is the Buckwheat Flour as you then can use it to complete your Recipe Book. Buckwheat flour is used in two recipes specifically and without it, you cannot make those dishes. By attending the New Year Festival on New Year's Day, you will obtain 10 Rice Cakes. Incidentally, there is one other ingredient that one should mention perhaps, and that is Cheese. Cheese in this game is made only through a Cheese Maker. You need to order a Maker Barn from Gotz and once it is completed, order the Cheese Maker from Grey at Saibara's Smithy. You will need 20,000G and a piece of Adamantite for every Maker you order. If you process Milk through the Cheese Maker, you will obtain Cheese. Process Milk in a Mixer in your Kitchen and you will obtain Butter. The other processed food with Milk as a base is Yoghurt. There is a Yogurt Maker that can be purchased from Saibara as well. There is one item that can be made either in your kitchen or by using a Maker. That item is Mayonnaise. If you make Mayonnaise using the Maker, you will not need to use Oil. Of course, the price of the Maker itself far surpasses the cost of Oil, but if you wish to have every possible item that is available in the game, you will want to order all the Makers. Remember that you will need to make each size of Mayonnaise at least once in your Kitchen in order to complete your Recipe Cookbook. Completing your Shipping List In order to complete your Shipping List, you must ship one of every 'Recipe' or 'Cooked Item' in this game. You cannot ship any cooked item in the ordinary way by placing it in a shipping container. Instead, you either must place it in the Basket, then dump the contents of the basket into any shipping container or you can ship it directly through the Cannery. N.B. If you study your Farm Menu, you will see a separate chart for every item that is on your Shipping List. Access that chart to see how many items at each level you have shipped as well as the shipping method. For example, for Cucumbers, you will see a listing for every level from 1 to 99. Next to each level are the Methods of Shipping as well as a place to record any Giant crops you have harvested. There are four different possibilities: Normal, Big, Can, ALL. For any item that cannot be designated in such a fashion, Xs are placed in every spot where an entry ordinarily would be made. An O is placed in every spot that designates a successful completion of the goal. There is a curious anomaly in this game wherein any cooked item shipped through the Cannery will complete the shipping chart for that item, filling both the 'Normal' and the 'Can' spaces, but a cooked item shipped via the basket will not complete the chart as the Can space will remain blank. If, therefore, you do not wish to ship more than one of any cooked item, ship it through the Cannery in order to complete the Shipment chart. To access the Shipment Chart for any item in the Shipping List, tap the icon of the item itself. To access the name of any item on the list, tap the number shipped instead. Accessing individual items in the Shipping List in this game can be annoying as it takes forever to scroll down the list and there appears to be no way to speed up the process. All Recipes in Harvest Moon DS 6 Elementary Cooking Manuals are sold at the Casino Window. Each contains a few basic recipes with hints as to optional ingredients that can be added. In the next section of this guide, you will find ALL basic recipes that can be made in Harvest Moon DS. In some cases, the 'best' recipe has been added as well. With respect to any recipe that is included in the First Cooking Books sold at the Casino, I have made a note to that effect as well as giving any information with respect to 'optional' ingredients from the book in question. You will see four different 'optional' notes in the First Cooking Books. The first stipulates 'None' which means that the Basic Recipe is the ONLY recipe. The second declares 'Nothing in particular'. You can experiment if you like with these. The third suggests that you 'Try various things' which usually means that a number of vegetables, fish and/or fruit can be added to improve the Basic Recipe. The fourth actually lists some of the optional ingredients that can be added by name. N.B. For those who play the U.K. version, please be advised that there are no books in that version of the game. ---------------------------------------------------- FRYING PAN RECIPES ---------------------------------------------------- STIR FRY: Basic Recipe: (+40 Stamina -1 Fatigue) Cabbage Oil ------ Best Stir Fry: (+80 Stamina -9 Fatigue) Cabbage Oil Onion Carrot Bamboo Shoot Matsutake Mushroom Eggplant Green Pepper .............................................................. It is similar to the Cooking Festival in FoMT and MFoMT in some ways but different in others. In FoMT/MFoMT, the 'theme' will be a type of dish such as 'Rice Dish' or 'Bread'. In HM DS, the theme is regulated by the implement used to cook the dish. In the second year, for example, the theme is 'Pot Recipes'. You therefore must make a recipe that uses the Pot in order for your dish to qualify as an entry. In FoMT/MFoMT, winning the contest is guaranteed if you make the 'Best' version of any recipe. This is not so in HM DS. In the first year, there is no hope of winning, but in the second, you can but only if you make the 'Ultimate Curry'. My character made the best versions of 'Stew', 'Cheese Fondue' and 'Rainbow Curry' and still was told by the Gourmet that 'there appears to be something missing'. When he made the 'Tempura Buckwheat Noodles', he was told that: 'This is what is called homemade. Very delicious and heartwarming.' Even so, he did not win. It was only when he made the Ultimate Curry that the Gourmet pronounced his entry 'G O O D', then told him: 'Delicious! You should become a professional chef. It reminds me of old times.' Thomas then announced: And the winner is... Freyr! It was truly delicious. I congratulate you from the bottom of my heart.' You must go twice to the Festival, first between 10.00 a.m. and noon to find out what the theme will be. (When you attempt to leave the beach, you will find yourself in your house at noon.) Go back again after noon and before 6.00 p.m. to enter your dish. The Festival will end at 6.00 p.m. and you will find yourself in your house afterwards. The only other way to win is by entering Relaxation Tea. Evidently, even the Basic Relaxation Tea Recipe will be pronounced exceptional. ******************************************************************************* Links to all Freyashawk Harvest Moon DS Guides: Harvest Moon DS General Guide Harvest Moon DS Heart and Rival Heart Events Guide Harvest Moon DS Shipping List Guide Harvest Moon DS 101 Sprites Guide Harvest Moon DS Calendar Guide Harvest Moon DS Cooking 101 Recipe Guide Harvest Moon DS Crops Guide Harvest Moon DS Ultimate Guide to Mining Harvest Moon DS First Year Events Guide
